When a customer asks an AI “what’s the best mechanic near me?” or “recommend a dentist in San José,” the model doesn’t invent the answer from nothing. It assembles it from sources that already exist. And for local businesses, one of the most important is your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business).
The chain almost nobody sees
It’s worth understanding the path, because it tells you what to fix:
- ChatGPT’s web search leans on Bing’s index. If Bing doesn’t have your local information, ChatGPT doesn’t have it for that query either.
- AI local results draw on Business Profile data: name, category, address, hours, reviews.
LocalBusinessstructured data on your site reinforces and confirms that same information.
In other words: the same profile that earns your spot on the Google map is the one feeding what AI says about you. If it’s incomplete or out of date, you start at a disadvantage on both sides.
What to fix first (in order)
- 1. Claim and complete the profile 100%. Correct category, address, real hours, phone, website. Empty fields are missing signals.
- 2. Write a specific description. Not “we’re the best at customer service.” What you do, for whom, in which area, what sets you apart, concretely. That’s the part an AI can cite.
- 3. Reviews, and replies to them. Reviews and your responses are among the strongest signals that a business is live and real. Don’t buy or fake reviews: it gets detected and it burns you.
- 4. Matching data (NAP). Identical name, address, and phone across your site, your profile, and directories. Inconsistencies confuse both Google and AI.
- 5. LocalBusiness schema on your site. It hands crawlers (including Bing’s, which feeds ChatGPT) your information in a format that leaves no ambiguity.
The honest part
None of these steps “guarantee” ChatGPT will recommend you. Nobody serious can promise that, because AI answers vary and your business doesn’t control them. What they do is put your information where AI systems look for it, correct and consistent. That’s the difference between having a shot and not having one.
How to know where you stand
Before changing anything, measure. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI about your category in your city and note whether you show up, your competition does, or nobody does. That’s your real baseline, not a hunch.
