Your Google Traffic Dropped and It's Not a Penalty: It's AI

By Black_Index · Published

If you opened your analytics and saw Google visits drop for no clear reason, take a breath: it’s most likely not a penalty or a mistake on your end. It’s that Google now answers a lot of searches right on the page, with AI Overviews, and the person gets what they came for without clicking through to any site.

This is called zero-click search, and it isn’t new. But AI sped it up. Independent analysis from SparkToro shows most Google searches now end without a click to the open web. When an AI Overview sits at the top of the results, the share of people who click falls further still.

Why it isn’t a penalty

A penalty looks different: sharp drops tied to a specific update, pages falling out of the index, notices in Search Console. AI Overview erosion is slower and more even. You still show up, you still rank, but fewer people click because they already read the answer up top. Confusing the two leads you to “fix” something that isn’t broken.

The mindset shift: from traffic to citations

Here’s the uncomfortable part. For 20 years the game was rank high, win the click. That game is shrinking. The new one is being the source an AI trusts enough to cite in its answer.

And it’s not as bad as it sounds. The click that does survive the AI Overview tends to be higher-intent: the person already read the summary and chose to visit your site anyway. Less traffic, but better qualified.

What to measure instead of just sessions

Stop watching “total visits” on its own and start watching:

  • Do AI systems cite you? Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI directly about your category in your area, and see if you show up. (Our Scanner does exactly this, free.)
  • Click quality, not volume. Conversions and inquiries per session, not raw sessions. If traffic dropped but inquiries held steady, you didn’t actually lose anything.
  • Impressions vs. clicks in Search Console. If impressions rise while clicks fall, that’s the classic zero-click signal: you’re visible, the answer just happens without a visit.

What to do about it

There’s no trick. What works is the same thing that earns a person’s trust: clear, direct answers, a real name behind the business, verifiable facts (not invented), and structure an AI can extract without ambiguity. Content that genuinely answers gets cited. Filler to fill a calendar doesn’t.
